Wasila or Shirk ?

Tawassul through the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) and awliya
What is the ruling on supplicating Allah through an intermediary (tawassul), such as through the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), and the (friends of Allah) awliya after their passing away. What is permissible and what is not?

How Does One Make Tawassul Through The Prophet (Alihis Salam)?
How does one make tawassul through the Prophet (Alihis Salam)?

Calling on Someone other than Allah for HelpIs it permitted to call someone other than Allah for help? Is this not bordering on shirk? How about taking vows for other than Allah?
Isn't Tawassul Just A Form Of Shirk?
In defense of tawassul two things are said. That is, that Muslims don't call the saint a god and that the prayer goes to God ultimately who answers it. Hindus say the same thing about their idols that they are just intermediaries. Does this mean that the difference between Muslims and polytheists is just superficial and we have similar interaction with saints as they with their idols, but they call them gods and we don't? Is this not a very superficial distinction between tawheed and shirk?
Tawassul Through the Awliya
I have read the evidences provided by yourselves for tawassul via the Prophet (sallaallahu alayhi wassalam). I have not, however, seen any evidence for intercession via saints ...is there any such evidence and if not, then how can we say that this is permissible?

Sunni Saint Worshippers?
Why are you so-called traditionals [sic.] saint worshippers? Why do you claim to be sticking to the Sunnat of Muhammad [Allah bless him and give him peace] and then worship so-called saints who don't want your worship because they are busy with their Rabb [Lord]?

Practices at the graves of the scholars and righteous in the Indian Subcontinent and elsewhere
